* First went to sea as a cadet Deck Officer on Vesty's Blue Star Line, after schooling in Sydney.
* First went to war in 1967 when his ship, the Scottish Star (above), was trapped in the Great Bitter Lakes during the Arab-Israeli War.
*
Served as a Lieutenant with the Sultan of Oman's Navy, on the Al Sultana and several other Omani warships in the early 70s, and was highly decorated for his Navy service.
* Returned to UK for university, then was hired by Gearbulk and after skippering their bulk carriers around the world he was appointed Gearbulk Manager Middle East, based in beautiful downtown Dubai. He survived a few Desert Storm-type wars & a few decades of desert air. He was also painted by Graeme Inson standing beside a big blue door in Oman (though Inson later transformed his image into a more Arabian bystander!)
* Rusty then returned to Australia, and a job as skipper with Captain Cook Cruises.
* Later, he landed a 'sweet little job' as a skipper with Sydney Harbour Ferries.
* In his spare time, Rusty does sterling volunteer work with the Rural Bush Fire Brigade (see photo below) and is a Master Mason.
* Rusty is also an excellent handyman, and is currently working on restoring a house he bought in the NSW seaside town of Kiama.
